Director Garth Davis’ ambitious second feature, Mary Magdalene, proposes a re-writing of this mysterious figure’s role in the Christian narrative of Jesus’ life. Avoiding any literal stylisation of ancient theological texts, the titling for the film instead took on a quietly contemporary complexion.
